As part of our Jazz Legends Series, Jane Ogle brings her Billie Holiday show to the Beach. "Billie on Tybee!" hits a lot of high notes but it doesn’t gloss over the low points in Billie Holiday’s life and career. Holiday struggled with love, trust, drugs, and money her whole life. Her music and her artistry were the safe harbor in the storm, and she had an incredibly resilient career, though anyone would agree it was cut much too short.
Jane Ogle and the Southern Holiday Jazz Band will let the music do most of the talking, with more than 20 songs framed by stories from Billie’s life. These include her discovery and first recording with Benny Goodman, the impact of the nationwide recording studio strike in 1942, and her triumphant comeback at Carnegie Hall.
Most of all, the songs to get the point across that she gave it all she had. She fought long and hard to succeed, and she never gave up on her music. The legacy of her ongoing popularity and influence of her music has never waned. Includes "God Bless The Child," "Night and Day," and "Lady Sings The Blues."
Sat., Feb. 3, 8 pm. Tickets $18 general admission
