Johnny Mercer's 109th Birthday Bash!

  • Tybee Post Theater 10 Van Horne Ave Tybee Island, Ga 31328 (map)

Join us this Sunday afternoon for a concert celebrating the 109th birthday of Savannah’s favorite son, the immortal Johnny Mercer! A half dozen of the Coastal Empire’s most accomplished singers accompanied by a three-piece ensemble will fill our concert hall with all the classics, from Blues in the Night and Summer Wind to Accentuate the Positive and In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening.

Presented by the Friends of Johnny Mercer and produced by Chris Chandler, this entertaining matinee production features guitarist and songwriter, Jim Wann, composer of the Tony-nominated Best-Musical “Pump Boy’s and Dinettes.”  Jim celebrated the 25th anniversary of his hit show with an original cast reunion at New York’s Feinstien’s/54 Below.

Other noted performers include alto sax player and former director of Armstrong Atlantic State Universities Jazz Program, Randall Reese. Singer-songwriter Gary Swindell will be accompanied by guitarist James Lee Smith. They will perform unique arrangements of ‘Mercer’ classics. And Keith Gay, owner of Tybee Beach Vacation Rentals, will open the show singing several Mercer classics. He will be joined onstage by sons Cody Gay and Keith Gay Jr. performing “Old Black Magic.”

We’ll have a special appearance by the Groves High School singing the Mercer/Chris Chandler collaboration, ”A Merry Christmas to You All.”

Musical accompaniment will be provided by the Tybee Post Trio: Chris Chandler on piano, Johnnie Kennedy on bass; Marc Cordray on drums, and Randall Reese on alto sax.

Sunday, Nov. 18, 3 pm. Tickets $20
